Established on the west bank of the Chippewa River, Chippewa City was the county's first seat. When Montevideo, on the east bank, was given legislative priority, Chippewa City faded away. Authentic structures are supplemented with newly built ones in traditional style. Visitors who tour the community get a great glimpse of bygone life, complete with craft demonstrations and pioneer professions. A trading post, church, school, print shop, blacksmith shop and dress shop are among the 23 buildings available for touring. A gift shop can be found as well.
