Historic Chippewa City

Established on the west bank of the Chippewa River, Chippewa City was the county's first seat. When Montevideo, on the east bank, was given legislative priority, Chippewa City faded away. Its spirit lives on, however, in this created community, which gathers historic buildings from the turn of the century into an ersatz village. Authentic structures are supplemented with newly built ones in traditional style. Visitors who tour the community get a great glimpse of bygone life, complete with craft demonstrations and pioneer professions. A trading post, church, school, print shop, blacksmith shop and dress shop are among the 23 buildings available for touring. A gift shop can be found as well.

Fiesta City Speedway

For engine-revving, high-octane spectator sport, head to the county fairgrounds for a bit of Minnesota-style stock car racing. Camping, swimming, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and sledding are among the activities available. The nearby wildlife management area maintains another 32,000 acres of terrain for animal and bird habitats.
