MONTEVIDEO, MINNESOTA ATTRACTIONS

Historic Chippewa City
151 Pioneer Dr junction of Hwys 59 and 7, Montevideo  56265 • 320-269-7636
Distance: ~1.45 mi
Established on the west bank of the Chippewa River, Chippewa City was the county's first seat. When Montevideo, on the east bank, was given legislative priority, Chippewa City faded away. Its spirit lives on, however, in this created community, which gathers historic buildings from the turn of the century into an ersatz village. Authentic structures are supplemented with newly built ones in traditional style. Visitors who tour the community get a great glimpse of bygone life, complete with craft demonstrations and pioneer professions. A trading post, church, school, print shop, blacksmith shop and dress shop are among the 23 buildings available for touring. A gift shop can be found as well.

Fiesta City Speedway
584 SW 1st St Chippewa County Fairgrounds, Montevideo  56265 • 320-905-0868
Distance: ~13.32 mi
For engine-revving, high-octane spectator sport, head to the county fairgrounds for a bit of Minnesota-style stock car racing. The track is a semi-banked dirt oval, 4/10 of a mile long, and it's the site of plenty of energetic activity from drivers and eager cheering from fans. Among the classes of racing you'll find are Street Stock, Super Stock, Modified and Late Model. Races typically run from mid-May to mid-September, and Friday events begin at 7:30pm (gates open at 5pm).

Established in 1941, this park was created as part of a regional flood-control measure, and it's distinguished by a number of WPA-created structures. Its 530 acres sit at the southern end of Lac Qui Parle Lake and are a haven for migrating birds, especially geese, swans and pelicans. Camping, swimming, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and sledding are among the activities available. The nearby wildlife management area maintains another 32,000 acres of terrain for animal and bird habitats.
